This is a self paced course aligned to The Australian Curriculum incorporating a variety of curriculum areas. The course is split in to two topics fire and flood, beginning with a study of the picture book Fire written by Jackie French. Children will explore a range of literacy based activities, Art, Geography, Science and STEM. Topic 2 is Flood which begins with a study of the picture book Flood by Jackie French. Children will explore a range of literacy based activities, Art, Geography and Science.

Both topics also contain a research component to the course allowing children to develop research skills and develop their knowledge of acquiring, processing and communicating geographical information.

Inquiry Question:

How can the impact of bushfires or floods on people and places be reduced?

  • mapping and explaining the location, frequency and severity of bushfires or flooding in Australia
  • explaining the impacts of fire on Australian vegetation and the significance of fire damage on communities
  • researching how the application of principles of prevention, mitigation and preparedness minimises the harmful effects of bushfires or flooding

These lessons can be done at any time and any in sequence after completing the first lesson.
